Even though there are many comfortable
and homely accommodation facilities, the country is still
under – supplied with accommodation facilities particularly
at key and strategic tourism nodes. This adventure is a not
fully tapped potential source of revenue. There are
opportunities for development of accommodation
establishments at key tourism destination in the country.
Development of hotels, up market lodges and resorts; at
prime tourist destinations throughout the country, including
the Lesotho Highlands area - Katse, Mohale, Lejone, Bokong,
Ts’ehlanyane, as well as Sehlabathebe, and Sani Pass is top
priority.

Health and Wellness Resorts |
|
Health spars and wellness resorts
present an area with great investement potential in Lesotho.
With her: high altitude, clean mountain air, abundance of
naturally clean water, distinct seasons of the year, endemic
medicinal plants, hot springs and seclusiveness, Lesotho
boasts a unique health and wellness investment potential.
Investments in the form of high class, integrated facilities
featuring: outdoor and indoor sports arenas, accommodation,
wellness spars as well as sports treatment / medi centre
will yield remarkable rewards.

Water Sports and Recreation |
|
Katse and Mohale dams of the Lesotho
Highlands Water Project pose a notably good opportunity for
initiating water – based sporting and recreational
activities. The lakes are particularly suited to leisure
cruse boats and extreme sporting events. Additionally there
are further developments in the pipeline such as Phase 2 of
the Highlands Water Project and the Metolong lowlands water
supply reservoir which will spawn more lakes.

High Altitude Training Facilities |
|
Lesotho has a unique feature of being
the only country in the world which lies entirely above
1000m above sea level, with its lowest point being 1400m
above sea level. This makes her an ideal location for high
altitude sports training facility.
Thus Lesotho is an ideal location for high altitude sports
training facility.
A high class, integrated facility is envisaged that would
feature among other things:

Specific Projects |
|
Besides the broad sector opportunities
highlighted in the foregoing paragraphs, there are a few
specific investment projects that have been identified and
being promoted. These include:
Koti Sephola Ski Resort
A site has been identified at the Koti Sephola, which is an
ideal location for a second ski resort (the first being Afri-Ski,
which started operations two year ago) in Lesotho .
This is intended to be an all-year-round holiday resort,
incorporation other facilities and activities and
complementing the winter ski facility.
Katse Tourist Town
The concept is to develop a tourist town at Katse Dam that
would be attractive to and suitable for up-market visitors.
This village should take the form of a purpose designed
settlement that is focused on the needs and demands of the
targeted tourist market segment
The tourist town would include a hotel, bed and breakfast
accommodation, back packer hostel, restaurants, retail
outlets, art and craft outlets, bars and museums. The
primary concept is that that the village should have a
limited number of large establishments operated by large
tourism organizations and a large range of small tourism
establishments operated by individuals or small enterprises.
Opening the village up to individuals will permit in the
inflow of intellectual, artistic, entrepreneurial and
financial capital into the village which is essential in
establishing such a tourism village.
HNRRIEP Lodges
Accommodation facilities are being put up in some of the key
tourist areas in Lesotho as part of the Highlands Natural
Resources and Rural Income Enhancement Project (HNNRIEP).
Such facilities are being put up at: Tshehlanyane Nature
Reserve, Liphofung Caves and Bokong Nature Reserve. When
complete these facilities will be privatized for operation
and further development.

Tour Operation |
|
This sub-sector is an emerging, yet
growing segment of tourism in Lesotho, for potential to set
up credible tour operation business in collaboration with
local operators.

Boating Excursions and Canoeing |
|
Water popularly known as “white gold” is
in abundance in Lesotho. There exists an opportunity for
unique environment friendly water based tourism activities
around areas such as the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP)
Dams areas, and throughout the country’s pristine rivers.

Ski Resorts and Related Services |
|
Well known as the Kingdom in the Sky,
Lesotho‘s high altitude and snow capped mountains in winter
boasts awe inspiring slopes for the development of Ski
Resorts. The now flourishing Mahlasela Afri Ski Resort is
evidence that skiing is a viable investment in Lesotho.

Other economically viable Investment Opportunities |
|
These include the development of
heliports for panoramic view of the majestic Maluti Mountain
Range, parachuting and hot air ballooning facilities and
services, adventure films shooting location, development of
traditional arts, crafts, pottery, wool and mohair products,
business and information call centres, conferencing getaway
venues and establishment of golf estates.
